What to expect when working with me

I do these steps prescriptively and intuitively. I often fold these in with other tools in the work.

I act as a non-shaming accountability partner for students who need it. My texts regularly include, “Gentle nudge. Did you do ____? If not, how can I support you?”

  • Without these basic ways to regulate the brain, mood, and hormones, no other Executive Function skills can happen. I concentrate on this foundational work first. It usually takes 2-3 weeks to regulate fully.

    1. Sleep: consistent bed and wake up?

    2. Movement: gentle at first (does not have to be cardio)--walking, yoga

    3. Water: Are we dehydrated? how many ounces per day?

    4. Fuel Foods: enough protein, veggies? At regular intervals?

    5. Mindfulness practice: thought downloads (a form of journaling), meditation?

  • Using a student’s observational Watcher self, I have students fill out or audio in real time a time audit activity so that they can reliably answer the questions, "Where does my time go? Is it smoking weed and scrolling on social media? Netflix?"

  • Short sprints of activity (using a timer for 6  minute, 12 minute, 20 minute intervals) to clean, get dishes done, move around, tidy one’s work space, do classwork, answer emails, reflect on the day, etc.

  • I start each live one-on-one session asking clients to give me FIVE WINS.

Pride Pong is like ping pong for our wins. I ask students to report out what is going well instead of what is wrong. The primitive brain loves to point out how we are shit/losers.

  • I partner with students with great apps that I help students set up a budget. Helping students create (and keep) a budget. Many students live at home and long to move out so they hope to create more independence for themselves and get moving, she will need to create a budget and save.

  • I partner with students to help them figure out best how to honor their future selves by planning their day, week and month. Google calendar? Paper calendar? A mix of both or none? We uncover the system that works best for students.
